Text: These figures are
used by American children to enact informal dramas. Presumably
they represent gods or past leaders, but, if so, it is peculiar
that the Americans have represented their gods or past leaders
without genitals. The figures may represent bad gods or demons
of infertility, however the children's interaction with them
does not suggest any fear or contempt. Since a society's gods
embody the values of that society it would seem that these
figures were intended to teach the children something, but
when parents are asked what this lack of genitals is meant
to teach they become uneasy and deny any intention to convey
values. ©
